Vascular surgery

Vascular surgery is a specialisation of medicine that aimed at maintaining blood circulation with the focus on treating diseases of the arteries, veins, and lymphatic system.

The vascular procedures adopt minimally invasive techniques as well as open surgeries, to treat conditions like aneurysms, blockages, and peripheral artery disease. Vascular surgeons aim to restore proper blood flow thereby avert major complications like a stroke or loss of a limb.

Vascular surgery, is thus a surgical subspecialty that covers the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the circulatory system, but not the heart and brain’s intracranial and coronary arteries.

Vascular surgeons diagnose and treat conditions affecting arteries, veins, and the lymphatic system.

Common Conditions Treated:

  • Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD):Narrowing of arteries in the limbs, often causing pain with walking (claudication).
  • Aortic Aneurysms:It is the occurrence of bulges in aorta. Which, may lead to its rupture if not treated.
  • Carotid Artery Disease:Narrowing of arteries in the neck that can lead to stroke.
  • Venous Disease:Conditions like varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Vascular Malformations:Abnormal connections between arteries and veins.
  • Lymphedema:Swelling due to lymphatic system problems.

Some procedures performed in vascular surgeries are:

  • Bypass Surgery:It is the surgical procedure, wherein a graft is place which results in rerouting blood flow around the blockage.
  • Angioplasty and Stenting:Widening narrowed arteries using a balloon and a stent.
  • Endarterectomy:Removing plaque from an artery.
  • Aneurysm Repair: It is the surgical procedure of endovascular repair of the aneurysms.
  • Thrombectomy:Removing blood clots from arteries or veins.
  • Varicose Vein Treatment:Procedures like sclerotherapy, laser ablation, or vein stripping.
  • Dialysis Access Creation and Maintenance:Creating and maintaining access for dialysis patients.

Importance of Vascular Surgery:

  • Improved Blood Flow:Restoring blood flow to vital organs and limbs.
  • Reduced Risk of Stroke and Heart Attack:Addressing conditions like carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease.
  • Prevention of Limb Loss:Treating severe PAD and other conditions that can lead to amputation.
  • Improved Quality of Life:Reducing pain, swelling, and other symptoms of vascular disease.

Vascular surgery is a wide field that include a range of procedures aimed at improving and maintaining the health of the circulatory system.
