Obstetrics and gynaecology

Although Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN or OBG) are medical specialties that go hand in hand and are focused on women wellness, it is a combination of two areas of expertise:
Obstetrics: Deals with the complete cycle of pregnancy from conception, childbirth, and the postpartum period, which would include timely monitoring and progress of fetal development, by using imaging methods
Gynecology: Gynecology on the other hand focuses on the health of the female reproductive organs including the diagnosis, treatment and preventive care.
Some common conditions under gynecology are:
Common Gynaecological Conditions:
- Menstrual Disorders: Irregular, heavy, or painful periods.
- Infections: Yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia and gonorrhoea could lead to affecting the vagina and cervix.
- Structural Abnormalities: Relatively common abnormalities like Uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder resulting in the enlargement of ovaries with cysts, thereby leading to irregular periods, fertility issues, and metabolic problems.
- Pelvic Floor Disorders: Conditions like pelvic organ prolapse (where pelvic organs descend into the vagina) and urinary incontinence (leakage of urine) this could occur after childbirth or during menopause.
- Cervical dysplasia:
Abnormal growth of cells in the cervix, which may lead to cervical cancer.
- Vaginitis:
Inflammation of the vagina, caused by conditions like including infections.
- Dyspareunia:
Pain during sexual intercourse.
- Menopause:
The natural cessing of menstruation cycle.
