Nephrology

Nephrology is a specialization that encompasses the diagnosis and the treatment of kidney related diseases to ensure normal functioning of kidneys and the preservation of kidney health.  It aims at providing complete care for patients suffering from chronic kidney disease, kidney stones, hypertension, electrolyte imbalances, and acute kidney injury. Nephrologist use diagnostic techniques and personalized treatment plans, to preserve kidney function and manage complications.

Conditions treated under nephrology:

  • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD):

It is a long-term, progressive damage which impacts the ability of the kidneys, of filtering waste and regulation of fluids and electrolytes.

  • Acute Kidney Injury (AKI):

The functioning of the Kidney shows a decline, as an outcome of an injury, infection, or certain medications.

  • Kidney Stones:

Hard deposits of minerals like calcium. that accumulate and form stones in the kidneys resulting in pain and blockage of the urinary tract.

  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):

High blood pressure can damage the kidneys.

  • Diabetic Nephropathy:

The inability of the kidney to remove waste and excess fluid due to the

inflammation of the glomeruli which are the filtering units of the Kidney.

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD):

Formation of cysts in the kidneys, potentially leading to reduced kidney function. This a genetic condition.

  • Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS):
A kidney injury arising out of the destruction of red blood cells.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):
Infections affecting the urinary system, including the kidneys, which can lead to complications if left untreated.
  • Electrolyte and Acid-Base Imbalances:
Imbalance of the electrolytes (like sodium, potassium, calcium) and acid-base levels can affect kidney function.
  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD):
The final stage of Chronic Kidney Disease, where the kidneys function at a very low level or not functioning at all.
  • Dialysis:
A treatment that is used when kidneys fail and the functions of the kidney is done using alternate methods.

In  the event of kidney failure, replacement of a kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor, commonly called transplant is the available option.
