Lipoma

Lipoma is a benign tumor, formed by the accumulation of fat tissue that develops, under the skin. known as the subcutaneous tissue. Lipomas are generally harmless and don’t require treatment unless they are painful, show growth, or cause cosmetic concerns. 

Lipomas are soft, rubbery, and movable when touched. They are generally lesser than a few centimeters and are round or oval shaped. They often do not show any growth for years.

They occur just under the skin, however in certain cases it could be deeper in the body. The most common locations of lipoma are back, trunk, arms, shoulders, and neck. Lipoma itself is not painful but can cause compression of a nerve resulting in pain.

Treatment:

Treatment of lipoma is not always necessary unless it causes discomfort by pain, restricts movement, or shows rapid growth. In the event found it necessary by the dermatologist, the lump is carefully excised under local anesthesia., and recurrence lipoma is rare.

The Lipomas that do not require any intervention observed for any visible changes. 

The procedures for treatment are:

  • Surgical Removal:Surgical intervention is recommended where the Lipomas that are painful, growing, or causing cosmetic issues.
  • Liposuction:Liposuction is generally used to remove the fat tissue from the lipoma. 
  • Steroid Injections:In some cases, the lipoma is shrunk the lipoma, using steroid injections.
